Frequently Asked Questions
When will you join me in labor?
I do not have any expectations or requirements for when I join you once you have gone into labor. I ask that you let me know when you feel like you are shifting into labor, but I am available to join you when you are ready for additional support.
Do you have a time limit on how long you will labor with us?
No, I do not! I will stay with you from the time you call me to join you until generally 2 to 3 hours after you give birth to your baby.
Do you have backup support just in case?
Yes!! I have several other doulas that I am able to call upon if I need a backup. I purposely do not overbook myself to ensure I can support each family that hires me. But I do love the beauty of a solid support system, just in case.
Will you support hospital births and even planned cesareans?
Absolutely! I have seen the transformation that occurs when a mother feels supported and cared for in a hospital. I have personally experienced the difference between doula support and no doula support, not only in the hospital but also with a planned cesarean. Due to that, it is my honor and privilege to support families in and out of hospitals!
I am planning a home birth. If I end up needing to transfer to a hospital, will you go with me?
Yes! I will transfer with you as many times as you need. So if that means that we transfer between your home and a birth center for check-ups with midwives or even transfer into a hospital, I will transfer with you. I do drive my own vehicle, but we will go at the same time so that you feel safe and supported along the way.
What happens if I have a long labor? Will you have to leave?
The only time I leave my clients is if they request that I step out for a bit. This typically occurs during hospital inductions or prolonged early labors. My clients often prefer me to be with them as they get settled in if they need a hospital induction. Then, if things are not picking up super quickly, we may discuss the fact that early labor can take a while, and if they can get some sleep in this early phase, it would be wise to take advantage of that. Some clients ask me to stay close while they rest, and others prefer that I head home and rest as well. Then they call me back in when they are ready for more support again. For a prolonged early labor, we might discuss me popping by to help with a couple of things to assist the baby in rotating into a better position, allowing labor to progress, or giving you a rest break. In that type of support, I often will be with you for 30 minutes to a couple of hours to help you with your concerns, and then if you feel ready, I will pop out to let you rest and labor at home until you are ready once again for more support.
